I need your help. I’m renovating our center hall colonial and the time has come to fix the entry stairs that I Clark Griswold’d like two years ago. I’ve put the jewels and railing on pause and stained the treads a beautiful walnut color. Now it’s time to pick a paint color for the risers and stringer etc.

Graphite by Benjamin Moore makes my heart flutter, but should I choose a darker black?!

Help a sista out. Cause I can’t decide.

I’m not from 🍉. I don’t believe any of my ancestors experienced much oppression in their lives like many other people posting this trend.
I can’t say that I can deeply empathize with any of the oppressed. But here I stand. I stand against genocide.

You don’t have to have heritage linking you to oppression to stand against it.

I’ve struggled with what to say. Will it help? Will I say the right thing? The horrors we’re witnessing are almost paralyzing. How do you adequately express everything that comes with watching, live and in color, the cleansing of a whole nation of people?

A month ago, I didn’t know what to say. I thought it was complicated because I really had no clue what was going on. I struggle to find words often.
But I’ve realized you don’t need special words to stand up.

The privilege I have to be able to improve my home while others sift through the rubble of what used to be theirs and their ancestors’ home is something I can’t ignore. I will never accept that this is justified.

*reposting because IG removed my audio 😑*Two years ago I tried to fix our wobbly stair railing. It ended up escalating and I ripped it out in a fit of rage after the newel post snapped in half. Spoiler, I wasn’t the first person to break the newel, it was glued together by the previous owner
Life became too overwhelming and we’ve been without a stair railing since. Over the summer I found these GORGEOUS newels and railings that were salvaged from the Race Street Friend’s school (meetinghouse) in Philly. They’re from the 1800s and I couldn’t turn down the gorgeous craftsmanship as well as the history they held.

Our 1990s center hall colonial has seen some sh*t in her day and she is rough around the edges. She’s also a boring, standard 1990 center hall and I want to add some character to her.
So follow along as I struggle my way through retrofitting these reclaimed stair parts into our home!

Waiting until temps are consistently below 65 degrees ensures you avoid most algae growth that can occur if you close your pool too soon. Here are five mistakes I made when tiling this shower. It may look like I killed this DIY, but let me keep it real with ya. I’m a newb.

1. Choosing Basalt tile. Basalt is a very brittle and porous stone. I chose it because I wanted the patina the salts would create when exposed to water. What I didn’t want was everything that touched it to cause it to crumble or leave a stain even though it was sealed about 10 times.

2. The manufacturer recommended using white thin set for setting these tiles. I don’t know who in their right mind would recommend white for dark, porous tiles that absorb everything the touches it. That person should be fired.

3. Just buy (or rent!) the expensive tile saw with a sled. Your cuts will thank you and you won’t be left with these janky cuts. (I was in a rush for a 6 week renovation challenge.) lesson learned.

4. These damn leveling clips are like one giant mind fuck. They are the best invention EVER. Your tiles will be smooth and level like the earth if it was was flat. BUT, see mistake number 1. That porous tile + these stupid clips = one million clip shaped stains all over your beautiful new shower.

5. This one may be common sense to the pros, but YouTube university did me dirty on this one. USE SILICONE. You’ll thank me later when you don’t have to scrape crumbling grout from all the corners a year later.
